We Are What We Eat

September 15, 2009

After four years of being a vegetarian, one fateful incident with a delicious roasted chicken brought me back to the omnivore mainstream. But in rejoining the club, I have laid down some ground rules. In the same way that I don’t buy every package of cookies off the shelf at the grocery store just because I can, I don’t buy every variety of meat.

It’s understandable that we look at the neatly packaged hamburger at the store and feel disconnected from the actual cow that it came from. But even shallow research will lead us to a bunch of stomach turning truths about how that cow lived and died. In a very profound way, I believe that we are what we eat and that if corporations won’t look out for what’s right, it becomes our duty. By making the choice to buy meat from humanely farmed animals we are saying something about what we will and will not stand for.
