Allyn’s Cafe and 80 Beers Around the World

Allyn’s Café in Columbia Tusculum is a Cajun, Mexican Restaurant and that’s fine and dandy. But the real reason go there is because they have one of the most eclectic collections of micro brews in Cincinnati.

They’re all bottled — no draught on tap. But when you’re holding a beer menu the length of the U.S. Constitution, it’s hard to care. Sit back and enjoy a bottle of Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter or Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA.

If you’re the competitive type, join the 80 Beers around the World program. Drinking 10 different beers will get you a free appetizer and drinking 40 will get you a t-shirt. But if you drink 80 different beers you’ll forever be emblazoned on a plaque hanging on their Wall of Fame.

Hey, if you’re not going to be famous for anything else, you might as well guzzle your way to immortality. This amazing feat was accomplished in just three days by the current record holder, a legacy that continues to light up the faces of the Allyn’s staff.

In addition to their reputation for craft beer, Allyns has also been awarded the following: Best Cafe, Best Mexican, Best Quesadillas, Best Patio, Best Booth at Taste of Cincinnati, Best Crawfish Boil, Best Enchiladas, New Classic Restaurant, Best Turkey Chili, Best Place to find local musicians, Best Place to debut (Songwriter Night), Best Beer and Wine List, Best Margarita’s, Best Eclectic Cuisine, Best Small Wine Shop.

Phew! I’m tired just thinking about it.

Do you eat at Allyn’s often? If you do, what do you get?

I rarely eat there… I’ve been known to indulge on cheese fries on occasion and maybe a burrito here and there. But mostly I go for the hardcore stuff. What are your thoughts?

I have eaten there and thought the food was just okay, but I really enjoyed the beer selection. I also thought that buying a bottle wine and corking it at your table was fairly reasonable. Great summer spot!

We don’t eat there very often. I have a hard time ordering off large menus. Jess tends to get annoyed with me so we tend to avoid places where this might be a problem…I know this sounds weird, but it is just one of those things.
